" Apart "

I wonder,,,,,,have you ever stopped to observe the wonderful glow of the western skies as the sun sets, with the sliver of the crescent moon rising delicately over the trees and that hour the light baths the world in a special way, reflecting everywhere from surface to surface, off the bridges, the still waters, shimmering from light to deep darkness.....and the hues of the skies turn from crimson, purple, then deep indigo blues.....and then presently, darkness unfolds it's intimacy and as it continues to darken over the western seas, the beautiful stars render their celestial light,,,,so far away.

To observe, to watch and to give your whole attention to something this beautiful, your mind must be free of all preoccupation, if one wants to truly feel the moment, must we not?

It cannot be occupied with worries, problems, speculations beyond the immediate moment.

It is only in these moments when we seek inward and outward at the moment at hand, for then our mind is at peace and quiet, and that you can truly observe and be sensitive to extraordinary beauty....and perhaps that is the central clue to our problems of freedom.

What does it mean to be free?

Is freedom the ability to do whatever that suits you, going where you like.... whenever you like, thinking what you will.

Merely to have independance, Does this mean freedom?

I think many people are independant, but very few are free.

I think to be free is to be intelligent, intelligence comes to be when we begin to understand your whole environment, be it Social, religious, parental, and traditional influences that continually compress and close in around you.

But to understand these various influences....from your workplace, corporate marketing, governments, parents, religious leaders and from our cultures we belong to, of your beliefs, gods and superstitions to which we conform to unthinkingly...........

to understand all these and to become free from them requires deep insight and......intelligence. generally give into them because inwardly we are frightened....

frightened to not having a good job, a strong position in life, we are afraid of what the priest, parents, our jobs, and professors will say...

we are afraid of not following tradition, of not doing the right things society tells us we must do.

True freedom is really a state of mind, in which there is no fear or compulsion....or an urge to be secure.

Don't we want to be safe.

Don't we want to be told what marvelous persons we are...

how lovely we look or how extraordinarily intelligent and smart we are.

Otherwise we wouldn't need to put letters after our name..right?

All of this gives us self assurance,....a sense of importance.

We all want to be famous people, and here's the thing......the moment we WANT to be something, we are no longer free.

The man or woman who sees the absurdity of all this and whose heart is therefore innocent..and therefore not moved by a desire to be somebody...such a person is free.

What is intelligence?

To find out is not to come to any conclusions.

The moment you come to a conclusion as to what intelligence is.....

You cease to be intelligent.

That is what most people do....

people in government, corporations, academic halls, temples.....

They strive and have come to conclusions.

Therefore, they have ceased to be intelligent.

The intelligent mind is one that is always learning, never concluding.

An intelligent mind is a mind that is never satisfied with explanations, with conclusions.

Intelligence is an inquisitive mind, a mind that is watching, learning and studying.

Which means that there is intelligence when there is no fear.....

Intelligence is not knowledge, even if you read all the books in the world, it would not give you intelligence.

It is something that is so very subtle, has no anchorage.

If one is stupid and then says I must become intelligent, the act of trying to become intelligent is a greater act of stupidity.

Have you noticed how so many people treat people they think important, a governor, professor, a CEO, President, someone of importance, with respect....

but then treat their servant, a worker, a common man on the street who has nothing to give you with no respect and often with contempt.

Then we begin to understand how stupid we are, and in the understanding of that stupidity comes the beginning of intelligence.

With intelligence comes attention.

What is attention?

A student sits in a classroom, daydreaming, looking out the window, pondering....and the teachers says Pay Attention!.....

which means ..that you are not interested in studying and the teacher compells you to pay attention...

Which of course is not attention at all.

Attention only comes when you truly love what you are doing and deeply interested in something, for then you love all there is about it...then your whole mind,

your whole being is the moment.

Society is based on acquisiteness and ambition.

If we had no ambition, would we decay?

But doesn't ambition destroy the intelligent man?

Is ambition right or wrong, that's the question.

Look around, observe all the people who are ambitious...

What happens when one is ambitious...

aren't they thinking of themselves?

You may become cruel, push other people aside, think of yourself in trying to achieve and fulfill your ambitions.

There is a constant battle with you and others who also all want the same things you are ambitious for...

and is this conflict productive of intelligent creative living?

Are we ambitious when you love to do something for it's own sake.

When we do something with your whole being, not because you want something or to get somewhere, for greater profit or greatness,

But simply because you love to do it....

in that, there is no ambition.

In that, there is no competition, no struggle, no decay of the inner soul.

As long as there is the desire to gain, to achieve, to whatever higher and loftier levels,

then there is inevitable anxiety, sorrow, emptiness and fear.

The ambition to be rich, to be famous creates an emptiness which can never be filled.

So how can one be free of desire.

What you really want is not freedom from desire, but freedom from the worries, anxiety, the pain which desire causes.

So we must understand the whole significance of desire if one wished to eliminate the negative byproduct of desire.

As the shadows lengthen
The silver light reflects
As if it was kissed by the sea
before night of ink
Rain on me
Make me yearn
To search the sky

If You Forget Me

I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.
