Artist Statement

Frequently I'm asked in different ways by people I know and sometimes by strangers in my travels why I engage in photography, especially to the level of devoting so much of my time.

Quite frankly, I sometimes ask myself the same question, but deep down...........

Introspectively I try to understand this inner drive........why ? Why get up at 3 AM to be "there", why drive hundreds, or even thousands of miles to "see and capture".

Perhaps ultimately, when it comes down to it, I'm expressing the fact that I am here in this world, or in the future, I was here.................and part of a bigger element we call the universe.

As I am a part of a fragment of our world , photography brings my experiences and transforms them into an image which conveys a message that our world is beautiful and in some cases not so beautiful but ultimately it is all part of our humanity and part of the reason for creation in all of us.

A photograph I make is an equivalent of what I saw and felt at that fleeting moment in time. An expression of something inside me.............and perhaps a desire to communicate and share my vision and emotions.

I think a good picture becomes a part of our memory. What is it made out of.........What it looks like.................

Ultimately what it's about..........

Why is it that some pictures affects our emotions and grip us.

What makes a good picture........

....if a picture will emotionally connect with the viewer....if it becomes a part of their memory, then it is a good picture.

That is my drive.......and passion..........to make a good picture.

It seems so simple.........to take a picture...........

Why is it though that a good poet is able to take simple words and can create a poem that is profound, gripping, and grasp us in their meaning.........Yet so difficult for the rest of us. Simple words that are all there for everyone......... in a dictionary..........all in alphabetical order............for anyone to "take" and put into meaning..........yet not so simple.

In my life's journey, I continue and strive to visualize, capture and take the "right words" as a poet would, from the world around me.
